Nigeria’s Flying Eagles edge Senegal on penalties to reach U-20 AFCON semi-final

Nigeria’s U-20 national team has booked a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after edging out defending champions Senegal 3-1 in a tense penalty shootout.

The quarter-final clash at Egypt’s Suez Canal Stadium remained goalless through regular and extra time, pushing both sides into a penalty decider where the Flying Eagles held their nerve.

The win not only secured a semi-final berth but also confirmed Nigeria’s qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup set to be held in Chile.

Coach Aliyu Zubair’s squad struggled to break down Senegal’s resilient defence during open play, despite having gone unbeaten through the group stage. Their campaign had drawn criticism from some quarters, especially following a goalless draw with already-eliminated Kenya.

However, Nigeria kept their composure in the shootout. Precious Benjamin, Emmanuel Chukwu, and Israel Ayuma all converted their penalties, while goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt emerged as the hero with two vital saves.

Senegal faltered under pressure. Pierre Dorival and Mame Mor Faye were denied by Harcourt, and Ousmane Konaté struck the woodwork. Seydi Diouck managed to convert his attempt, but it proved insufficient.

“We prepared for all scenarios, including penalties. I’m proud of the boys for executing under pressure,” Coach Zubairu said after the game.

The victory moves Nigeria a step closer to claiming a record-extending eighth U-20 AFCON title.

They now await the winner between South Africa and DR Congo in the semi-final.
