Killings Edo govt threatens legal action against Neo Black Movement

The Edo State Government has initiated steps toward legal action against the Neo Black Movement, also known as Black Axe, following a surge in cult-related violence and killings across the state.

This development was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Fred Itua.

According to Itua, the state’s decision was triggered by the group’s public criticism of the government’s demolition of a property allegedly linked to cult activities.

He noted that the organization’s stance effectively established its connection to criminal operations carried out from the demolished site.

“The demolished building functioned as a hub for planning and execution of violent attacks across Benin and beyond. The government can not allow such structures to exist unchallenged,” he said.

He explained that the demolition was legally executed, relying on actionable intelligence and in accordance with the Anti-Cultism Law enacted by the Edo State House of Assembly.

The government also responded to the group’s claim of renovating six schools during the current administration. Itua said the state is requesting comprehensive documentation, including the names of the schools, records of renovation, and evidence of official approval.

“The group must identify the renovated schools, present documented proof, and provide official approval,” he said.

“Failure to comply will attract legal action for defamation and unauthorised infrastructural interference.”

Itua added that the demolished site would be repurposed to enhance public safety.

“To ensure continued peace, the state government will build a divisional police station on the demolished site to deter crime and enhance security within the affected area.

“More demolitions of cult-related buildings will follow. The administration backed by anti-cultism legislation, remains firm in cleansing the state of criminal cult operations and violent networks.”

Reaffirming the administration’s zero tolerance for cult violence, the CPS emphasized Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to protecting lives and property and distancing himself from any affiliation with cult organizations.
“Edo will never be a haven for cultists. All involved are advised to desist immediately, relocate, or face severe consequences,” he warned.

Itua concluded by stressing that the state’s anti-cultism laws remain in full effect, and the government would not relent in its mission to eliminate threats to peace and security.
