Jigawa commissioner returns N301m unspent funds from Ramadan Feeding Programme

In a notable act of accountability, the Jigawa State Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwalu Danladi Sankara, has returned N301 million in unspent funds to the state treasury. This followed the conclusion of the 2025 Ramadan feeding programme.
The refund was disclosed during a State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Malam Umar Namadi. The gesture has been widely praised as a rare display of financial prudence and transparency in public office.
The state government had allocated N4.8 billion for the Ramadan feeding programme, which successfully covered all 27 local government areas through approximately 700 feeding centres.
The programme, coordinated by a dedicated committee, reportedly served meals to more than 5,550 people daily over the 29-day fasting period.
The state executive council lauded Commissioner Sankara’s action, calling it a notable display of accountability and fiscal discipline.
Information gathered by The Nation revealed that no fewer than 300 people were fed in each of the 638 centres of 287 political wards in the state.
The programme not only provided meals to the underprivileged but also supported local farmers and businesses by sourcing food items within the state.
