Canada Many killed as driver rams car into crowd at Vancouver festival

Several people were killed after a driver plowed into a crowd at a street festival on Saturday in the Canadian city of Vancouver, local police said.

The incident occurred during celebrations for Lapu Lapu Day, which honours a 16th-century Filipino anti-colonial hero, according to Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sim expressed his condolences to the victims and the city’s Filipino community, calling it an “incredibly difficult time.”

The Vancouver Police Department confirmed that the driver involved is now in custody.

Authorities said the tragedy unfolded when the vehicle entered a section of the street where festival-goers had gathered.

Police have yet to release further details regarding the number of fatalities or the cause of the crash.
