Vehicles , shops destroyed as tanker explodes in Oyo

A devastating tanker explosion on Saturday left significant destruction in its wake along Lead City University Road near the Ibadan Toll Gate in Oyo State.
The explosion, which took place around 2:45 p.m., led to widespread damage to nearby businesses, cars, and motorcycles.
According to sources, the blast completely destroyed a shop that contained computer equipment worth millions of naira.
At the time of reporting, authorities had not confirmed any fatalities. The driver of the tanker and his assistant miraculously escaped the incident without injury.
Firefighters from the Oyo State Fire Service, assisted by their Federal counterparts, were at the scene working to contain the fire.
A shop owner, who asked to remain anonymous, described the terrifying moment: “I just heard a loud bang from outside. At first, I thought it was gunshots. Before I understood what was happening, the entire area was filled with thick smoke. Emergency calls were made to the fire service, but by the time they arrived, it was too late. I’ve lost everything in the fire and don’t know where to begin.”
Eyewitness Tokunbo Ojo recalled, “The truck driver had no reason to divert onto this route unless it was due to the ongoing road repairs. This road is riddled with potholes, making it extremely difficult for large vehicles. The truck tipped over and exploded while the driver was attempting to navigate the bad road section.”
“We are thankful that no lives were lost, but the property damage is immeasurable,” Ojo added.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident, stating, “Our teams are on the ground handling the situation.”
Meanwhile, security forces have been stationed in the area to maintain order and prevent potential unrest among the affected shop owners.
