FG reopens independence bridge in Lagos ahead of schedule

In a surprising reversal, the Federal Government has announced the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge, which links Ahmadu Bello Way to Marina in Lagos.

The decision comes after an earlier directive that would have kept the bridge closed for over a month, sparking concerns among commuters and businesses relying on the route.

Announcing the change, the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, conveyed the decision through a statement released on Wednesday by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha.

The Independence Bridge was originally shut down on April 1 for critical maintenance and rehabilitation work. Initially, the closure was expected to last until May, causing disruptions for motorists and commuters in the busy Lagos metropolis.

However, in a revised plan, Umahi revealed that while major repair work is still necessary, it has now been rescheduled for a later date. This adjustment allows for the bridge to remain open in the meantime, easing traffic congestion in the area.

To ensure the bridge remains motorable, the government has begun implementing temporary repairs. Umahi assured road users that these palliative measures will help maintain the bridge’s functionality until full rehabilitation efforts commence.

Acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the initial closure, he appealed for patience and cooperation from motorists.
