Suspect arrested over death of Bumpa co founder Teejay in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a female driver accused of causing the death of Adetunji Opayele, widely known as Teejay, a co-founder of the business platform Bumpa.

The tragic accident occurred on March 4 along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Victoria Island, Lagos. According to reports, the suspect, a healthcare professional, was driving when she struck Opayele, who was riding a power bike at the time.

Witnesses at the scene alleged that despite Opayele being unconscious, the suspect refused to provide assistance, reportedly expressing concerns about getting her car stained. The delay in medical intervention was further exacerbated by claims that several hospitals declined to treat him.

Public outcry over the incident has intensified, with many Nigerians questioning the legal charges brought against the driver. Some have called for the charges to be escalated to manslaughter instead of reckless driving.

Addressing the situation, the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed in a statement on Saturday that the suspect had already been brought before the court on March 12 after being discharged from the hospital.

“We can confirm that following a discreet and thorough investigation, the suspect was arraigned at Court 1, Tinubu, on March 12, following her discharge from the hospital,” Hundeyin said.

“She is facing charges of reckless and careless driving on a public highway, which resulted in the death of Opayele. The court granted her bail in the sum of N1 million, and the case has been adjourned until April 16. It is statutory procedure that police actions terminate once cases are charged to court.”

Hundeyin urged the public to respect the legal process, emphasizing the importance of allowing the judicial system to run its course.

“Everyone is enjoined to allow justice to be served in this matter. The Lagos state police command remains committed to transparency, fairness, and justice.”

Expressing condolences on behalf of the command, Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh extended sympathies to Opayele’s family and loved ones, acknowledging the sorrow caused by his untimely passing.
