State of emergency: Heated debate erupts in House of Reps over Rivers crisis

A heated argument broke out among members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday during a plenary session over President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
A video of the incident, shared online by AIT News, captured lawmakers engaging in a tense exchange over the controversial decision.
President Tinubu had announced the state of emergency in a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday night, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and state lawmakers for six months.
However, the Constitution mandates that the National Assembly must review and either approve or reject the proclamation within 48 hours if in session, or within 10 days if in recess.
For the state of emergency to stand, a two-thirds majority vote from both the Senate and the House of Representatives is required.
