Policemen reportedly cause major accident in Abuja after dragging steering with driver

A young man is fighting for his life following a severe accident on the Dawaki-Kubwa Expressway in Abuja, reportedly caused by the reckless actions of some Nigerian police officers.

Eyewitnesses claim the officers entered the victim’s vehicle without conducting a checkpoint or issuing a stop order, which escalated into a struggle that led to the tragic crash.

The incident came to light through a Facebook post by Opa Ugbede, who shared firsthand accounts along with images from the scene.

In his post, Ugbede wrote: “According to eyewitness reports, the boy was sent by his mother to buy sachet water and was returning home when police officers within the area forcefully entered his car without any checkpoint or prior stop order. One of the officers allegedly began dragging the steering wheel with him.

“In the struggle, the vehicle lost control, somersaulted three times, and plunged into a gutter. The young driver was severely injured in the crash, with suspicions of internal bleeding.”

Witnesses said the victim, suffering serious injuries, was barely conscious before being taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention. Concerns are mounting over the possibility of internal bleeding, a life-threatening condition if left untreated.

Eyewitnesses also expressed outrage over the officers’ actions following the accident. Rather than assisting the injured driver, the officers allegedly tried to escape the scene.

Ugbede continued: “Shockingly, instead of assisting the victim, the police officers reportedly attempted to flee the scene. However, vigilant bystanders acted swiftly, deflating the police vehicle’s tyres and ensuring the boy was rescued from the wreckage.”

The incident has sparked widespread public anger, with many calling for an immediate investigation and accountability for the officers involved.

Meanwhile the FCT Police command spokeswoman, Josephine Adeh, said the commissioner of police has ordered immediate investigation into the incident.

“The Commissioner of Police FCT Police Command, CP Olatunji Disu, psc, strongly condemns this act. He has ordered the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of X-Squad to commence a comprehensive investigation immediately ,” Adeh said in a post on X on Sunday morning.
