Tragedy as fallen mast kills driver in Edo
Edo State

A tragic incident occurred on Thursday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Edo State, as a middle-aged man lost his life after being struck by a fallen broadcast mast.

The unfortunate event happened during a heavy breeze that preceded a downpour, which disrupted a praise night organized to commemorate Governor Monday Okpebholo’s 100 days in office.

According to eyewitness accounts, the deceased, who was a driver for a decorator, was caught in the accident while trying to salvage his boss’s decorating materials. Sadly, the mast collapsed, fatally striking him.

A police officer present at the scene, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the strong winds were responsible for the mast’s collapse.

The officer said, “We were all gathered at the stadium waiting for the commencement of the praise night when the breeze began. Unfortunately, the mast fell and killed the man instantly. His head was shattered and it was a gory sight.

“I gathered that he was a driver to the person who was at the stadium to decorate the venue. Most people had to leave the stadium after the rain subsided.”

Efforts to get the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, for confirmation, proved abortive as he did not take several calls to his line.
