Minister harps on potential of NWDC hails Abdullahi Ma aji s appointment as MD

The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Ata, has reaffirmed the potential of the North West Development Commission (NWDC) to drive significant progress in the region, particularly in addressing its key development challenges.

In a statement released on Monday by his aide, Seyi Olorunsola, the minister also commended the appointment of Professor Abdullahi Shehu Ma’aji as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the commission. Ata described the appointment as a recognition of Professor Ma’aji’s vast experience and dedication to regional development.

He further expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his leadership in establishing the NWDC, emphasizing its role in tackling the socio-economic issues plaguing the North West. According to Ata, the initiative is crucial for addressing the region’s poverty rates and developmental gaps.

“The North West region, despite its vast potential, has been grappling with significant developmental challenges. According to the 2019 poverty headcount data, states like Sokoto and Zamfara had the highest percentages of people living below the poverty line, underscoring the pressing need for targeted interventions in the region,” he said.

Emphasizing the commission’s key focus areas, Ata outlined its role in improving education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure.

“The establishment of the NWDC is poised to catalyze transformative change across critical sectors:
Education: Enhancing educational infrastructure and access to quality learning opportunities to empower the youth and foster human capital development.
Healthcare: Improving healthcare facilities and services to ensure the well-being of the populace, thereby reducing health-related vulnerabilities.

Agriculture and Food Security: Promoting aggressive food production through modern techniques to achieve food sufficiency and stimulate economic growth.

Infrastructure Development: Investing in roads, housing, water supply, and electricity to create an enabling environment for economic activities and improve the quality of life,” he stated.

The minister also expressed confidence in Professor Ma’aji’s ability to lead the NWDC effectively, particularly in its early stages, to ensure the successful implementation of its mandate.

“The NWDC’s strategy could unlock significant economic growth, transform the lives of its citizens, and position the region as a key player in Nigeria’s national development,” he noted.

Ata emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the success of the commission’s initiatives. He reiterated his congratulations to Professor Ma’aji and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the NWDC’s mission.

“With visionary leadership and collective commitment, the North West region is poised for a new era of accelerated development and improved quality of life for its residents,” he added.
