Bandit kingpin, Kachallah Bugaje, ‘abandons’ crime, cites Prophet Muhammad’s teachings

A feared bandit leader, Kachallah Bugaje, has announced that he is renouncing criminal activities, attributing his decision to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W).
In a video shared on social media by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama on Friday, Kachallah, speaking in Hausa, declared his departure from banditry while flanked by his armed fighters. Some were seen holding weapons and a rosary as they invoked blessings for the Prophet.
Swearing by Almighty Allah, Kachallah stated, “Wallahi-Tallahi,” affirming that he has permanently abandoned banditry and kidnapping.
He expressed fear of divine judgment and emphasized that his repentance was driven by a desire to be accountable before his Creator.
In the video, he also claimed to have released 50 kidnapped victims under his control, asserting that he did so voluntarily and not under any external pressure.
“I fear my Creator, Allah, who brought me into existence, and I fear the day I will stand before Him. I am not afraid of anyone except Allah,” he said.
He further explained that he and his followers, as admirers of Prophet Muhammad, could no longer engage in activities the Prophet did not condone, such as theft and kidnapping.
Kachallah revealed that his group had initially demanded ransoms of N15 million, N10 million, and N25 million from the families of the abducted individuals but ultimately released all 50 captives without payment, claiming it was an act of faith and love for the Prophet.
“Regarding the 50 people we kidnapped, we initially demanded ransoms—some N15 million, others N10 million, and some N25 million. However, out of the fear of Allah, we have released them without taking any ransom. We did this because of our love for Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W),” he stated.
He reiterated his commitment to a new path, adding, “As you can see, my group members are in good condition, and they have accepted to turn over a new leaf and follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W).”
Kachallah concluded his message with prayers for the Prophet, saying, “May Allah continue to bless our beloved Prophet, Anabi Muhammad (S.A.W).”
