The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal experienced chaos on Wednesday, January 15, as gunmen invaded the venue, causing widespread panic among lawyers, politicians, and attendees.

Reports indicate that the gunmen opened fire, prompting attendees to flee for safety. Security operatives stationed at the premises swiftly intervened, restoring order and allowing the tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, to resume its proceedings.

Reacting to the incident, the Edo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarret Tenebe, condemned the attack, describing it as “deeply disturbing.” He called on authorities to intensify security measures to prevent such occurrences, especially during sensitive judicial processes.

He said: “The tribunal is a sacred space, where justice is meant to be administered impartially. Any act of violence within its walls undermines the very foundation of our legal system and threatens the safety of all involved.

“Regardless of political affiliation, resorting to violence to resolve disputes is never justifiable. We must all condemn the shootings in the strongest possible terms,” Tenebe added.

He further called for civility among politicians alike and called on security operatives to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and made to face justice.
