Why Tinubu’s intervention couldn’t save Obasa from impeachment – APC chieftain

Fouad Oki, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has shed light on the political drama surrounding the impeachment of former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

According to Oki, President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to mediate and resolve the crisis among party members and lawmakers in Lagos ultimately fell short, leading to Obasa’s removal.

During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oki explained that Obasa’s impeachment was carried out in the best interest of the president and the party.

He highlighted that the decision was crucial to maintaining Lagos as a cornerstone of Tinubu’s political influence and leadership.

Oki further revealed that President Tinubu, during a recent visit to Lagos over the festive season, was informed about certain controversial actions attributed to the former speaker.

Despite the president’s intervention, the lawmakers proceeded with the impeachment, signaling a decisive move to address internal party concerns and protect the political stability of Lagos.

He said, “Before the President came home, this issue had been lingering. In the wisdom of members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the President’s attention was called.”

Noting that the speaker had began to see himself as an emperor in Lagos state, especially towards the governor, Sanwo-Olu, the APC chieftain said Obasa’s impeachment came as expected.

Oki said, “The President, as father and leader, called a meeting wherein he tried to make a sense out of the observations raised by elders of the party.

“Unfortunately, the President saw the (former) speaker (Obasa) as recalcitrant. I think that is what broke the camel’s back,” he added.
