Police arrest suspected human traffickers with 59 children along Abuja Kano route

The Nigeria Police Force has intercepted a white Peugeot J5 bus with registration number KMC 283 ZJ, suspected of trafficking 59 children aged between 4 and 12 from Kano State.

The operation, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarki Umar, occurred on January 6, 2025, around 3:30 pm along the Abuja-Kano route.

The children, who came from different families, were reportedly being transported by one Idris Usman to a male resident in Nasarawa State.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Olatunji Disu, confirmed that arrests have been made and assured the public that efforts are underway to reunite the children with their families.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Usman, who claimed to be a teacher with over 40 years of experience, allegedly lured the children under the guise of training them. His accomplice, identified as Al Hassan Ibrahim, served as the motor boy during the operation.

The FCT Police Commissioner said, “This incident has been classified as a case of suspected child abuse and trafficking, given the circumstances and the absence of proper documentation or parental consent for the movement of the minors.

“At present, the suspects, the vehicle, and all the children are in custody while a thorough investigation is underway.

“The Police Command is working closely with the FCT Social Development Secretariat (SDS) to ensure that the children are safely reunited with their families and to bring all those involved in this act to justice,” the CP said.

He reiterated the police commitment to protecting vulnerable groups, particularly children from exploitation and abuse in line with the Child’s Right Act 2003.

Disu also appealed to parents and guardians to remain vigilant and ensure the safety of their children.
