JUST IN: Minister meets telcos over proposed tariff hike

The Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, is currently in a strategic meeting with representatives of telecommunications companies to address demands for an increase in telecom tariffs.
Present at the meeting are key stakeholders, including representatives of MTN Nigeria, Airtel, Globacom, and 9Mobile, alongside government agencies like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
The telecom operators are advocating for tariff adjustments, citing economic challenges driven by the removal of the petrol subsidy and the floating of the naira.
However, the government, through the NCC, has maintained that existing options under the 2013 tariff price floor must be explored before considering any price hikes.
The meeting aims to balance the telecom sector’s operational sustainability with the economic realities of Nigerian consumers.
