Man ordered to sweep court for 40 days after wallet theft

A 23-year-old man, Rabiu Gambo, has been sentenced to sweep the premises of a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court for 40 days after being convicted of stealing a wallet.
The judgment, delivered on Tuesday by Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, took into account Gambo’s cooperation and his decision to plead guilty, which led to a lenient non-custodial sentence.
Magistrate Emmanuel also warned the convict to desist from future crimes, emphasizing that the punishment was meant to deter others.
The prosecution, led by Inspector Chidi Leo, explained that on December 27, one Yusuf Mai-Shago of Ungwan Sarki, Kaduna, reported the theft at the Malali Police Station.

According to the prosecution, Gambo stole a wallet containing ₦50,000, two ATM cards, and other identity cards. The act was found to contravene the Kaduna State Penal Code of 2017.
This case highlights the judiciary’s use of non-custodial sentencing for minor theft cases, focusing on corrective measures rather than imprisonment.
In a separate incident, Ogun State police have arrested two individuals for allegedly stealing a motorcycle. Details of their case are currently under investigation.
