JUST IN Tinubu s govt ends 5 year mining ban in Zamfara
Illegal Mining

The President Bola Tinubu-led federal government has lifted the mining ban in Zamfara State, citing improved security conditions in the region.

The announcement was made on Sunday by the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, through an official statement.

The ban, which was imposed in 2019 during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, was intended to curb illegal mining and its links to banditry and insurgency.

However, Alake highlighted the adverse effects of the prohibition, stating that it enabled illegal miners to exploit the state’s resources unchecked.

“After over five years of restrictions, I am pleased to announce the lifting of the ban on mining exploration in Zamfara State, thanks to significant security improvements,” Alake said.

He emphasized the potential of Zamfara’s mineral wealth, which includes gold, lithium, and copper, to significantly boost Nigeria’s economy.

He added, “With the lifting of the ban, I believe Zamfara’s mining sector can now contribute meaningfully to national revenue and enable better regulation of mining activities, combating illegal operations more effectively.”

Looking ahead, the minister noted plans to introduce reforms and create a more favorable environment for mining investment, aiming for a revitalized sector by 2025.
