A tragic stampede at the Obijackson Centre in Okija, located in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, left an unspecified number of people dead and several others injured on Saturday.
The incident occurred during the distribution of palliatives, which included rice, vegetable oil, and monetary aid.
These donations were reportedly provided by a prominent member of the community.
Eyewitnesses reported that a large and uncontrollable crowd, mostly women and children, gathered at the venue’s gate, leading to a chaotic struggle to gain entry.
“Many people collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital,” one eyewitness recounted, noting that a woman was critically injured in the commotion.
An unofficial source mentioned that one woman who fainted was transported to the hospital, though it remains unclear if she survived.
The aftermath of the incident revealed numerous shoes and slippers scattered around the entrance gate, left behind in the chaos.
