Tinubu s tax reforms show courageous leadership says Dogara
Yakubu Dogara

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Yakubu Dogara, has commended President Bola Tinubu’s bold approach to tax reforms, describing him as a leader prepared to make courageous decisions, even at personal cost.

Dogara made these remarks during the 14th Convocation and 17th Founders’ Anniversary of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State.

Highlighting the importance of fearless leadership, Dogara stated, “A transformational leader must be brave. A good leader doesn’t just allow history to happen—they make it.”

He lamented that poor leadership had contributed significantly to Nigeria’s challenges but expressed hope in Tinubu’s recent actions, including granting financial autonomy to local governments and introducing sweeping tax reform proposals.

“With what President Bola Tinubu has done—whether it’s freeing local governments from economic stagnation or his bold tax reform proposals before the National Assembly—I see a glimmer of hope that we may have a leader prepared to lead with unbridled courage, even at personal cost,” Dogara said.

The former speaker added that Tinubu’s willingness to tackle difficult issues was a positive shift for the country, stating, “It gladdens my heart that we are now dealing with a leader who is not avoiding stubborn tasks or putting off difficult conversations.”

While acknowledging opposition to the reforms, Dogara emphasized the need for constructive criticism and alternatives rather than outright rejection. “Those opposed to the reforms should clearly articulate their disagreements and propose better options for Nigerians to evaluate,” he said.

He also criticized calls to abandon the reforms, describing such demands as “bad politics, sheer buffoonery, or both.”

Dogara, who serves as Chancellor of Achievers University, urged Nigerians to embrace sacrifice, accountability, and collective resolve to address the nation’s economic challenges. He also called on universities to contribute by generating practical solutions through innovation and partnerships with industries and government.

Speaking at the event, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Bode Ayorinde, encouraged graduates to create opportunities rather than wait for them. He stressed the importance of industrialization in driving Nigeria’s economic growth, job creation, and societal stability.

“To achieve this, we need industries that process our raw materials locally, create value-added products, reduce import dependency, and boost exports,” Ayorinde said, calling for collaboration among government, the private sector, and academic institutions like Achievers University.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Omolola Orinoye announced that 700 graduates received degrees during the convocation, with 71 earning First Class Honours. She highlighted the university’s commitment to affordable education through tuition-free programs and scholarships.

Three prominent Nigerians—Governor Umar Bago of Niger State, Oba Adedokun Abolarin of Oke Ila, and Dr. Fidelis Ayebae—were awarded honorary doctorate degrees for their significant contributions to society.
