Police gun down kidnappers in Akwa Ibom, rescue director, niece

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Thursday neutralized three suspected kidnappers during a gunfight at their hideout in the state.
The operation led to the rescue of a prominent lawyer, Barr. Emmanuel Ubengama, a director with the Ministry of Justice in the Abak Local Government Area, and his niece.
The two had been abducted on Wednesday while traveling along the Abak-Ikot Abasi Road.
Sources close to the family revealed that the assailants ambushed the victims on their way back to Abak.
The incident was swiftly reported to the Abak Police Division, prompting a rapid response coordinated by the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo. Tactical operatives were dispatched to locate the kidnappers and secure the hostages.

Police efforts led to Ikot Ukpong village in the Afahaobong area of Abak LGA, where the suspects’ hideout was discovered. A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, leaving three suspects dead while others fled the scene.
Following the shootout, officers stormed the hideout and found the victims tied up inside a specially constructed soak-away facility. Both were promptly rescued.
Confirming the incident, ASP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, said efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects. She emphasized the command’s commitment to maintaining zero tolerance for criminal activities, especially as the holiday season approaches.
“The Command has warned criminal elements that nowhere in Akwa Ibom is safe for them,” ASP John stated.
The police also urged the public to cooperate with security agencies by sharing intelligence to curb crime in the state.
