Controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has voiced his support for President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills, describing them as beneficial for Nigerians.

Speaking on the reforms, Gumi acknowledged the potential of the bills to strengthen the nation’s economy and provide long-term benefits.

However, he noted public concerns surrounding the Value Added Tax (VAT) component of the reform, urging the government to address these issues transparently.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday, Gumi said: “I believe the contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all.”

The conflicting stances reflect ongoing debates on the proposed reforms’ implications for equity, economic stability, and regional development.

The four tax reform bills before the National Assembly have been at the front burner of national discuss.

The four bills — the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill — are currently before both chambers of the National Assembly for passage.

Amid the discuss, the bills have been tagged as anti-North, with critics saying they would only benefit Lagos and Rivers states.

However, Tinubu’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed the claims, saying the bills would “enhance the quality of life for Nigerians, especially the disadvantaged, who are trying to make a living”.
