 Tension as gun battle erupts between soldiers gunmen in Abia

A fierce gun battle has been reported in Mbata, Umuchima village, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, involving personnel of the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade, Ohafia, and unidentified gunmen.

According to unconfirmed reports, over 15 Hilux vehicles and armored personnel carriers descended on the village around 6 a.m.

The operation targeted suspected gunmen allegedly camped near a river marking the boundary between Abia State and the Mbaise area of Imo State.

Eyewitnesses reported that soldiers have taken strategic control of key junctions leading in and out of the village, while others continue to engage the gunmen in the surrounding bushes. Gunfire has reportedly persisted, creating tension in the area.

As of now, there have been no official statements from the Nigerian Army or the Abia State government regarding the incident.

This development comes on the heels of Governor Alex Otti’s recent pledge to bolster security in the state. During a recent meeting with top security officials, the governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to combating criminal activities and ensuring the safety of residents.
