Anambra State witnessed a wave of violence on Monday as gunmen attacked residents and security operatives in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area, and Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area, reportedly killing four people.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers, suspected to be enforcing the controversial Monday sit-at-home order, arrived in Abatete around 8:30 a.m., firing indiscriminately at residents.

They later moved to Ukpo Roundabout, where they continued their rampage, targeting both civilians and members of the Anambra State Vigilante Operatives.

During the attack, at least four vigilante members were killed, and several vehicles belonging to the security team were set ablaze.

The President General of Abatete Community, Chimame Ezigbo, was also injured by gunfire and rushed to a hospital in critical condition, alongside another vigilante operative.

Shocking videos circulating on social media show the aftermath of the attacks, with vigilante members lying lifeless in pools of blood at the two locations.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident. Spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated that operatives had been deployed to the affected areas and promised further details after a full briefing.

The incident adds to growing concerns about security in Anambra and the broader Southeast region, where sit-at-home enforcements and violent attacks have become increasingly frequent.
