Policeman ‘shoots’ motorcyclist to death while dispersing suspected thugs

A major tragedy occurred on Friday as a police officer in Minna, Niger State, reportedly shot a motorcyclist while attempting to disperse suspected thugs involved in violent clashes.
The incident reportedly occurred at the M.I Wushishi Eastern Bypass Road, a busy route that has seen increased traffic due to ongoing road construction. According to eyewitness accounts, the tragedy unfolded as security personnel intervened to quell a disturbance caused by allegedly violent youths.
Sources disclosed that the youths, identified as illegal miners, had been embroiled in clashes over the past three days. During the dispersal operation, one of the officers allegedly fired a shot, which struck the motorcyclist.

The situation further escalated when tricycle operators mobilized to block the road in protest, causing significant disruption. The road was later cleared following police reinforcement.
Confirming the incident, Wasiu Abiodun, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Niger State Command, said:
“Reports were received this morning at about 9 am of some miscreants bearing dangerous weapons fighting around Kafintella and Angwa-Kampani, while police patrol teams of Tudun-Wada and Maitumbi Divisions mobilised to the area to restore normalcy.”
He added, “During the process, one person was reported to have lost his life. Suddenly, tricycle riders mobilised to block the road while reinforcement was dispatched, and the road was cleared, normalcy was restored.”
Abiodun assured the public that an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death, stating, “and not killed by the police.”
