Plateau govt approves new minimum wage for workers

The Plateau State government has officially approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for its civil servants, marking a significant milestone in workers’ welfare across the state.

This decision, confirmed by the Plateau State Head of Civil Service, Stephen Gadong, on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, was publicly announced on Thursday in the state capital, Jos.

The approval follows negotiations by the Committee on Consequential Adjustment on Salaries, which reached an agreement to address workers’ demands for fair pay.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has authorized the immediate implementation of this new wage structure, reflecting the administration’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for public sector employees.

In his statement, Gadong encouraged civil servants to view this wage increase as a demonstration of the government’s dedication to their well-being. He urged workers to show appreciation by increasing productivity and dedication to their roles.

This long-awaited wage adjustment brings Plateau in line with national discussions on fair labor standards. Previously, Plateau was among seven states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that had not implemented the wage increase, with states like Zamfara, Sokoto, Osun, Cross River, Imo, and Taraba still pending approval.
