Lagbaja: IGP orders police officers to wear black bands to mourn COAS

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed all officers of the Nigeria Police Force to wear black bands for seven days to honor the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
The decision comes following the official announcement of Lagbaja’s passing, confirmed by the presidency on Wednesday.
Lagbaja, who was highly respected within Nigeria’s military, died after an extended battle with an undisclosed illness.
In addition to the black bands directive, President Bola Tinubu has ordered that National Flags be flown at half-mast across Nigeria for the same seven-day period, underscoring the significance of Lagbaja’s contributions to national security.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, conveyed the IGP’s directive in a statement on Thursday, marking the start of a formal period of mourning within the police force.
The black bands serve as a symbol of respect and unity with the military during this time of loss, reflecting the high regard held for the late COAS.
“This directive is to pay tribute and honour the late General who has shown gallantry, dedication, and passion for fighting violent crimes and insurgency in Nigeria.
“He was a great leader who deserves to be honoured by all means. May the soul of the late COAS rest in peace”, the statement added.
