Mendy wins £11m legal battle against Man City over unpaid wages

French footballer Benjamin Mendy has won a legal case against Manchester City, securing around £11 million in unpaid wages.

Mendy, who was acquitted of multiple serious charges, including six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, successfully argued that his wages were wrongfully withheld by the club during the legal proceedings.

Manchester City had suspended Mendy’s pay, citing his inability to fulfill club duties. This financial strain forced him to sell his Cheshire mansion and rely on loans from former teammates to manage legal expenses, bills, and child support.

The tribunal ruled in Mendy’s favor, granting him the majority of his withheld salary, though the exact figure remains subject to further negotiation.

In summarizing the judgment, the tribunal stated that “Mr Mendy will be entitled to receive the majority of his unpaid salary, although not all of it.”

Judge Joanne Dunlop noted that Mendy had spent two separate periods in custody, totaling about five months out of the 22 months covered in his claim.

During these months in custody, Manchester City was entitled to withhold his pay.
