Oluyede assumes office as Acting Army Chief, requests prayer for Lagbaja

In a historic move, Maj.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede has officially assumed duties as the Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), following an appointment by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.
This marks the first time in Nigerian Army history that an officer has been designated in an acting capacity for this role, filling in for the current COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who is currently on medical leave abroad.
During the handover ceremony, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Christopher Musa emphasized the significance of Oluyede’s appointment, noting that this temporary leadership arrangement is an unprecedented step in the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

“The event today is something that is new, that has never happened in the history of the armed forces,” said Musa. He added, “Our brother and friend went for medical check-up, and it is our prayers that he will take the time to recuperate and come back.”
According to Musa, Oluyede has been granted full authority to command the army under President Tinubu’s directive.
“No doubt, based on the challenges we have in the country, and the wisdom of the President, Commander-in-Chief, that today we present the authority to the Acting Chief of Army Staff for him to have full control and command of the Nigerian Army,” he stated.
Musa further explained that the appointment aligns with the Armed Forces Act, allowing for temporary leadership during times of unusual circumstances, as stipulated in the Laws of the Federation 2004, Armed Forces Act, Cap A-20, Parts 7, Sections 18 (1-4).
In his acceptance speech, Maj.-Gen. Oluyede expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu, saying he would fully dedicate himself to fulfilling the role’s responsibilities. “As we turn into this unique period, I request that we all continue to pray for Lt.-Gen. TA Lagbaja’s speedy recovery and safe return to complete the career cycle,” he remarked.
Oluyede also pledged to maintain the command focus established by Lagbaja and appealed for collective support in addressing the nation’s security challenges.
“We aim to work together to restore peace and promote prosperity across our country,” Oluyede concluded.
