Another gov approves N80,000 minimum wage, N7bn for gratuity payment

One of the governors in the country, Senator Douye Diri of Bayelsa, has approved N80,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the state’s civil service.
The governor also announced an upward adjustment in the monthly pensions for retirees and allocated N7 billion to offset outstanding gratuities. The measures aim to alleviate the financial difficulties workers and pensioners face amid rising living costs.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri highlighted the government’s commitment to easing the economic burden on citizens and aligning with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment Act 2024).

“To address the harsh times and in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment Act 2024), the Prosperity Administration of His Excellency Senator Douye Diri has approved the sum of N80,000 as minimum wage for the state’s workers,” the statement reads.
The governor further confirmed that the new wage structure includes consequential adjustments across various sectors, in line with agreements reached with labor unions in the state.
“To further ameliorate the challenges of our retired senior citizens, His Excellency also approved the payment and reduction of the outstanding gratuity liabilities by Seven Billion Naira,” the statement added.
Governor Diri expressed gratitude to the state’s workforce and labor leaders for their patience and cooperation with his administration’s policies.
PlatinumPost reports that while the Federal Government and the organised labour agreed on N70,000 minimum wage, some states including Lagos, Ondo, Kogi, among others, however, announced higher amount as minimum wage for civil servants in their states.
