Residents rush to scoop fuel from overturned tanker in Cross River community

Residents of Akamkpa, Cross River State, were seen rushing to gather fuel from a toppled tanker following an accident in the area.
The incident, which occurred on a major road, was shared on Facebook by popular journalist Agba Jalingo.
The tanker, which had been transporting fuel, overturned, causing a large quantity of fuel to spill onto the road.
In a risky scramble, locals quickly gathered at the scene with containers to collect the spilling fuel.
Such incidents are highly dangerous, as fuel spillage from overturned tankers can easily lead to fires or explosions.
Despite these risks, it is not uncommon for residents to seize the opportunity to collect free fuel, often driven by economic hardships and the high cost of petrol.
He wrote: “A tanker loaded with PMS had an accident this evening at Small Iwuru, Akamkpa LGA in Cross River State. Immediately after the bridge from Calabar.”
“See the number of people daring death and scooping fuel in the face of such massive danger.”
“I am also surprised to see the truck of the Dragon Squad of the Police parked closely and nothing was done to stop the scoopers from the imminent danger.”
“This is still ongoing.”
Platinumpost reports that a devastating petrol tanker explosion occurred in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State last week and claimed the lives of no fewer than 90 people, with 50 others injured.
Such incidents pose significant risks as the collection of fuel from accidents like these can lead to explosions or fire outbreaks, putting lives and property in danger. Authorities have been called to the scene to secure the area and prevent any potential disasters.
Despite the dangers, fuel scarcity and economic hardship in the region often drive locals to engage in the dangerous practice of siphoning fuel from accident sites. Emergency services have warned the public against such actions, urging them to prioritize safety.
