Investigative panel clears Bobrisky of allegations of special treatment during prison sentence

An investigative panel has found no evidence to support claims that Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, received special treatment or left prison during her six-month sentence.

Bobrisky, a prominent Nigerian crossdresser, was sentenced on April 12, 2024, for the abuse of the Nigerian naira and completed her sentence on August 5, 2024.

The investigation was launched by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following a viral video posted by controversial activist, VeryDarkMan.

In the video, a voice alleged to be Bobrisky’s claimed she had bribed Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials to drop money laundering charges.

Additionally, it was alleged that a “godfather” and the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Haliru Nababa, ensured Bobrisky served her sentence in a private apartment rather than in prison.

In response, the Minister of Interior appointed a panel led by Magdalena Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, to probe the Nigerian Correctional Service for potential corruption and misconduct.

On Monday, Uju Agomoh, Executive Director of Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), presented the initial findings to the Ministry of Interior.

The report concluded that there was no credible evidence that Bobrisky was granted any special privileges during her imprisonment.

It confirmed that she served her full sentence from April 12 to August 5, 2024, with standard remission applied. These findings refute the allegations of bribery and preferential treatment that had circulated widely online.
