INEC announces date for Anambra governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially scheduled the Anambra State governorship election for Saturday, November 8, 2025.
During a consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja on Thursday, the commission’s chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the announcement. He explained that the formal notice for the election would be issued on November 13, 2024, aligning with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, which requires election notices to be given at least 360 days before the poll date.
“As you are aware, the last governorship election in Anambra State was held on 6th November 2021,” Yakubu remarked. “By the effluxion of time, the governorship election is due next year. Consequently, the Commission has approved that the 2025 Anambra State Governorship election will hold on Saturday 8th November 2025.”

The election schedule outlines key dates, with party primaries set to take place between March 20 and April 10, 2025. The nomination process will commence on April 18, 2025, and conclude by May 12, 2025. Political campaigns are expected to begin on June 11, 2025, and run until November 6, 2025.
Yakubu confirmed that the election will be conducted across all 5,720 polling units within the state. Additionally, INEC will soon upload the complete election timetable and related details on its website and social media channels.
“The candidate nomination portal will open at 9:00 am on April 18, 2025, and close at 6:00 pm on May 12, 2025,” Yakubu said. “The final list of candidates will be published on June 9, 2025, and political campaigns will commence on June 11, 2025.”
