NNPP faces setback as Kano SSG s sister defects to APC says Baffa to also dump party

In a significant political development in Kano State, Hajiya Lami, sister to the Secretary to the Kano State Government (SSG), Dr. Baffa Bichi, has left the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lami, a prominent women mobilizer in the state, made the announcement at the Abuja residence of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin. She expressed her intent to also bring her brother, Dr. Baffa Bichi, into the APC.

Dr. Baffa Bichi, who served as the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund) from 2016 to 2019 under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, was appointed as SSG by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf on May 30, 2023.

It is worth noting that in February last year, Senator Barau defeated Baffa in the contest for the Kano North Senatorial District. Barau secured 234,652 votes, while Baffa, running under the NNPP, garnered 177,014 votes.

Speaking at the event, Lami stated, “Today, with my friends and political associates across Kano State, we have dumped the NNPP for the APC to join forces with like minds to address the challenges facing our State and our country. I will bring my brother, Baffa Bichi, to the APC soon.”

She was accompanied by other NNPP members who also declared their defection to the APC at the residence of Senator Barau, marking a notable shift in Kano’s political landscape.

In his response, Senator Barau welcomed the new members, assuring them that the APC is a large and inclusive party. He promised that the party would not fail them and highlighted the leadership’s commitment to good governance.

“We will treat all party members equally and fairly. The President is working hard to return our country to the path of progress and prosperity. Bear with him; our country will become stronger and we will all be happy for it,” he said.
