PDP urges Rivers residents to participate in LG polls, issues strong warning to police

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the residents of Rivers State to actively exercise their democratic rights by turning out in large numbers for the upcoming Local Government Area elections, scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024.
In a statement released by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party emphasized that the authority to participate in democratic processes, including local elections, is vested in the people of Rivers State. The PDP further stated that no individual, group, or organization has the right to interfere with this constitutional privilege.
“The people of Rivers State are ready for the election,” the statement read, noting that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) had declared its preparedness and availability of all necessary resources to conduct the election in line with the Supreme Court’s ruling. The PDP also stressed that no court has the legal authority to halt elections under the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), citing Section 84(15) of the Act.
The party strongly criticized the actions of the “APC-controlled Police,” accusing them of attempting to derail the electoral process in Rivers State. According to the PDP, a recent police raid on RSIEC facilities appeared to be an effort to obstruct the election, which was met with resistance from Rivers residents determined to vote.
“The police and the APC must understand that the people of Rivers State are committed to peace but will not tolerate any effort to undermine their rights to elect their leaders, especially at the local government level,” the statement warned.
The PDP urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure a safe and conducive environment for the elections, stating that his constitutional duty requires him to act impartially in upholding the nation’s democracy.
The statement concluded by commending the people of Rivers State for their commitment to democratic values and encouraging them to participate fully in the election process. The PDP also called on the national and international communities to hold the APC and law enforcement accountable if any disruptions occur.
