Kidnappers kill vigilante commander during rescue of abducted victims in Kwara

Lukman Balogun, the commander of a vigilante group and the Jagun of Igbajaland, was tragically killed during a rescue operation in the Igbaja community of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Kwara State.
His death has led to widespread protests by aggrieved youths in the area, who mourn the loss of a local hero who was known for his relentless efforts in combating banditry.
Balogun was fatally shot on Monday evening by kidnappers who had invaded the community the previous day, abducting three women.
Another two individuals were reportedly kidnapped from Kajola village early on Tuesday, adding to the community’s distress. The youths, who took to the streets in protest, accused suspected itinerant cattle herders of being behind the brutal crimes.

Olaitan Oyin-Zubair, the coordinator of the Kwara South Elders Security Forum, confirmed that Balogun was killed during a gunfight between his men and the kidnappers.
“Right now, the combined team of police, military, and vigilante men are in the forest around Igbaja and Oke-Ode searching for the abducted victims,” he said.
Sources revealed that Balogun was part of a team pursuing the kidnappers after the abduction of a prominent town resident. He was killed along the Ogele-Yaaru road during the mission.
The Elese of Igbajaland, Oba Ahmed Babalola Arepo III, urged the protesters to remain calm, acknowledging that Balogun’s death was a significant loss for the community.
He assured the youths that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. Femi Yusuf, the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, echoed the monarch’s sentiments, offering condolences and vowing that all efforts would be made to track down those responsible for the crime.
The Kwara State Police Command spokeswoman, Toun Ejire-Adeyem, described the incident as “unfortunate” and confirmed that police officers were actively pursuing the kidnappers.
The tragic death of Lukman Balogun has left the Igbaja community in mourning, as they continue to grapple with rising insecurity and banditry.
His bravery and commitment to protecting his people will not be forgotten, and his death has further fueled demands for stronger security measures in the region.
